Have you heard of Under30Media? It's a New York-based company started to help young entrepreneurs navigate with a bit more ease. Their most known branch, Under30CEO is a website that delivers tips, tricks and inspiration in a magazine-style layout, and the founders have already seen great success with it.
Now the same minds have launched a new branch of their company called Under30Experiences, which takes the same ambitious entrepreneurs and sends them around the world to travel in a new way.
I spoke the Matt Wilson, the co-founder, about what Under30Experiences is, why it began and how it's helped entrepreneurs so far.
In your words, what is Under30CEO and Under30Experiences?
Under3CEO is a media site for entrepreneurs, leading, inspiring and education the next generation. We've recently spun off a travel company for ambitious young professionals called Under30Experiences.
What was the inspiration?
When we graduated from school, we realized there was a lack of resources for people our age who wanted to build businesses. It was the height of the global financial crisis and people weren't getting jobs anymore when they were handed their diploma. We knew there had to be thousands of other people in our same situation, looking to create their own futures, instead of relying corporate America.
After seven months traveling around the world, working from my laptop, I was standing on a volcano in Iceland. We knew the time had come to give other people those same amazing international experiences and spin off a travel company. Under30Experiences now brings ambitious young people to three destinations—Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Iceland, with more lined up for 2014.
What's the story behind the name?
Everyone asks us about the name Under30CEO, and “what happens when we turn 30?”, or “I'm 31—can I come on a trip?” We always say Under30 is about attitude not age, and as long as you are young at heart you can be a member of our community.
How has business been doing since you started?
Through all the ups and downs of starting a business, Under30CEO now reaches a half million unique readers per month, and Under30Experiences will be running two trips to Costa Rica and two trips to Nicaragua this winter season.
What has your biggest failure been with Under30CEO?
Not focusing on one business model. In the early days of Under30CEO we couldn't decide on a business model. We tried consulting, membership, affiliate sales, daily deals, seminars, workshops, and we were eager to find the get rich quick scheme that the Internet promised. We finally matured and realized that building a business was a marathon not a sprint.
What has your biggest success been?
My definition of success is doing what I want, when I want, with the people I want. Luckily for me, I get to wake up and do that everyday. The business is structured so I can be in an office in New York with talented people, or in Costa Rica where I spent the winter surfing.
Getting to be able to travel the world and contribute to the personal and professional development of our readers, Under30Experiences attendees, team members, and ourselves has been incredibly fulfilling.
What about your service is unique that your competitors can't offer?
Under30Experiences bring together an amazing group of young people, for an experience you couldn't get by just being a tourist on your own. We curate everything from picking out the perfect resort, surf instructors, and local guides, to arranging briefings at the US Embassy, working with organizations to teach kids English and play soccer, to visiting homes of people who have worked their way out of poverty with micro-loans.
What advice would you give entrepreneurs just starting out?
Stick with it. There have been thousands of businesses that started at the same time we did and very few have survived. The people who were consistent were the ones who put in the work day in and day out until they were successful. Starting a business is easy, putting in the time it takes to make it successful is the difficult part. You only fail when you quit.
